"The Panhandler Series"

60 Portraits

24x18" each, oil on canvas

Coursing through expressive brushstrokes and beautifully blended colors is a narrative that reads like a diary.

The Panhandler Series was born, as the artist tell it, of a combined desire to paint portraits and combat "compassion fatigue" in a city whose panhandlers were looking younger, sadder, and ever more numerous.  Over the course of five years, Clamage painted roughly sixty panhandlers in the Cambridge and Boston area.

The series is presented as one piece. The result is an elegantly simple exposition of humanity.

The Panhandler Series encourages the viewer to engage, quietly holding us accountable for who we look at, and how.
