ISBN : 2-86941-117-0
Published in July 1990 by Maeght Éditeur, this 96 page Oevre Gravé is a beautiful marriage of art and literature. Texts by the novelist Jean Genet, writer and art critic Gerard-Georges Lemaire, the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, and the artist himself beautifully accompany black and white images of Giacometti's etchings and lithographs.
Giacometti was one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century. His work was particularly influenced by artistic styles such as Cubism and Surrealism. Philosophical questions about the human condition, as well as existential and phenomenological debates played a significant role in his work. Around 1935 he gave up on his Surrealistic influences in order to pursue a more deepened analysis of figurative compositions. Giacometti wrote texts for periodicals and exhibition catalogues and recorded his thoughts and memories in notebooks and diaries. *
Maeght began his career as a gallerist with a strong program that continues to be known for its publications, including gallery catalogues such as this. This book is a 96 page softcover written in French, perfect bound, printed in black and white, and in good used condition. After three decades, this copy has seen only gentle wear to the covers, and one tear to the spine, which was lovingly repaired by a past owner.
